Basic mailbox requirements
A lot of people don’t realize that there are a lot of rules and regulations that govern how and where you can place your mailbox. The only thing you have real choice is in how your mailbox looks, although even that has its limits to which all mailbox manufacturers adhere. Here are some of the more important rules to follow when installing or relocating your mailbox:
You need to place your mailbox or mailbox post between 41 and 45 inches from the road surface. The position they refer to is to the base of the mailbox or the opening of the mail slot. If there is a curb, place it between six and eight inches away from it.
As for names and number, if the mailbox is in front of your house, you need to have the house number. Obviously, if your mailbox is on another street that is different from yours then you need to put your full street address on the board.
There are several more rules that govern everything from the size of the posts, to where they should be, and another set of rules for wall mounted or recessed mailboxes.
All of this is necessary to ensure that the postman can deliver the mail efficiently, and that there are no issues that would affect the delivery of mail.
Failure to adhere to these guidelines can result in fines and then possibly legal action. All changes should be with the approval of your local post office.
